Lead Programs
FIRM’s Lead Programs strive to educate parents, caregivers, merchants, contractors and other stakeholders about the dangers of lead to children’s brain development. This is especially important as Fresno County has the highest per capita childhood lead poisoning rate in the State and refugee children are most vulnerable.
Lead can be found in the paint of pre-1978 homes, in some candies produced in Mexico and in the paint applied to a variety of children’s items produced overseas. FIRM’s lead programs offer education and outreach to parents, merchants and kids, testing of children’s products to assure safety and training for building contractors about how to work safely around lead paint so that a lead hazard is not created.
FIRM also assesses residents’ homes for lead and other hazards and works with the City of Fresno to assure safe repairs. FIRM is partnered with the City of Fresno Code Enforcement, Fresno County Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program, the California Department of Toxic Substances Control, Centro La Familia Advocacy Services and West Fresno Health Care Coalition in the Fresno County Lead Poisoning Prevention Collaborative.
