FIRM is excited to announce that there will be a full-time Cambodian staff member in the office starting this summer! FIRM has played a pivotal role in serving the needs of the Southeast Asian community for over two decades which has included the Hmong, Laotian, Cambodian, Vietnamese, Thai, Khmu, Mien and more. However, it is challenging to serve all of these groups without staff that are from the specific community! This is especially true with the Cambodian community that has its own language (Khmer) and many different cultural components. We have also seen that the Cambodian community is one of the least served Southeast Asian groups that constitute a significant population in Fresno. Fresno is home to approximately 6,000 Cambodians and the Cambodian community is challenged by many of the same barriers as other refugee groups. The Cambodian staff person will be working in the CBANS mental health program (drop-in, one-on-one, peer support groups, workshops, etc.) and with children and families in the home visitation program. We are pleased to partner with the County of Fresno and with First 5 Fresno County who made these services possible and who join with FIRM to ensure that the Cambodian community is not forgotten!
