Lead is a heavy toxic metal that is found
in paint, soil, dust and other things
around the house. Lead poisoning is an
illness caused by eating something
containing lead or breathing in dust
contaminated with lead. Some sources of
lead poisoning may come from pre-1978 paint used on housing, soil contaminated by chipping or peeling pre-1978 paint and individuals who work with lead that do not protect themselves correctly.
The most vulnerable individuals that can get seriously ill with lead poisoning are children between the ages of 1 to 6 years old due to the fact that their bodies are still developing. Some of the effects of lead poisoning are: damage of the nervous system, interfere with growth, cause hyperactivity, decrease appetite and with sever high levels in the system; may even lead to coma and death. The only way to know if your child has lead poisoning is to have a blood test done.
FIRM, alongside with collaborated Lead partner agencies will be outreaching to the community on how to get assess for lead poisoning, and if qualified; may get help through the City of Fresno for some home renovation if the home is tested positive. FIRM staff will be present on Wednesday, March 19 at the main entrance of City Hall between the hours of 9am to 4 pm with more information.
